The latest from the Food and Drug Administration, citing a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine that suggested there could be a link between the use of Viagra and the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
The report, which is based on a study conducted by Pfizer Inc., showed that the incidence of Alzheimer’s was higher in men, particularly those who had used Viagra as part of a sexual activity. Viagra, which is also used by many women, has been linked to up to two-thirds of people who take it as a prescription medication. This could cause them to think of Viagra as a dangerous drug that should be avoided.
The FDA’s approval of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction has been delayed in recent years due to concerns over the increased risk of Alzheimer’s, a condition that affects people of all ages.
The agency has also warned the public about the possibility of taking Viagra to treat Alzheimer’s, the latest in a series of reports that detail the risks of taking Viagra.
“The FDA has not determined whether Viagra is safe to use for treating this disease or whether it should be avoided,” said FDA Chairman John F. Kennedy Jr., in a statement.
“It is important that men who take Viagra do not take this medication and use it in conjunction with other medications that may increase the risk of serious side effects. These include other medicines that increase blood flow to the penis, such as nitrates used to treat angina, or certain blood thinners, such as warfarin, used to treat bleeding disorders, including heart failure, ulcers, and stroke, or certain antibiotics used to treat infections, such as Streptomycin,” the FDA said.
